While tens of thousands went maskless to Sunday’s Super Bowl in Los Angeles, including celebrities and local politicians, the California health secretary says that children should still keep their masks on in class.
LA’s Mayor Eric Garcetti was among those who did not wear a mask to the event, but to Health and Human Services Secretary Mark Ghaly, young children should keep their masks on.
The question came from Fox 11 anchor Alex Michaelson, who asked:
“They see images of the Super Bowl yesterday, 70,000 people, almost nobody wearing masks. They know that adults are going to be able to take off their masks, they know that kids, by and large part, do not have as bad of health outcomes as older adults. What do you say to outraged parents who say it is time to unmask our kids, especially if adults can take off their mask?”
CA is extending the school mask mandate until at least Feb. 28.
I ask CA's HHS Sec., Dr. Mark Ghaly, about the concerns of many frustrated parents…including a largely mask-free Super Bowl & adults being allowed to take off their masks…

“Why can’t kids? Especially if we believe in the vaccines, which kids can now take, if we believe in the air filtration systems, and we believe in the mitigation efforts?”
Ghaly responded that while the change would come soon for those restrictions, they would have to wait for the end of the month.
“I would say the message today, which I hope is clear, is today, a change isn’t being made. But in two weeks, confirming that the data continues to be where it is, taking the time to prepare and work with the school community and communities at large, that we anticipate making the change at that point,” he said.
“And that change is going to be one that I think will be met with a lot of excitement in some, and a lot of fear in other circles,” Ghaly concluded.
The unmasking does not stop at the mayoral level, but even goes up to the governor, Gavin Newsom, who did not wear a mask at SoFi stadium.
JUST IN: California’s top health official Dr. Mark Ghaly says masks will still be required in schools when the state lifts its statewide mask mandate tomorrow. (2/15).

LA’s mask mandate requires that everyone wear a mask, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status.
