Republicans Should Stop Calling On Biden To Resign: Strategists

Political strategists told the Daily Caller that Republicans calling for President Joe Biden to resign could be inadvertently benefitting Vice President Kamala Harris.

After weeks of saying he wouldn’t, President Biden revealed on Sunday via Twitter that he was withdrawing from the presidential contest. While he didn’t elaborate on his reasons or deliver a formal statement, numerous Republican members of Congress are suggesting that if Biden is not fit to seek a second term, he shouldn’t hold the position. Experts told the Daily Caller they have cautioned that Republicans’ desire for Biden to step down could provide a significant advantage to Harris in the upcoming election.

“The power of incumbency is huge. That’s why, even Republicans, who I absolutely think the world of, are making a mistake doing that. It is still good to have that guy out there bumbling and stumbling on the world stage. It is still good for Republicans to have that guy there. The power of incumbency is strong, and the best way for people to see her as a president is her to be a president,” Robert Cahaly, founder of polling organization Trafalgar Group, said.

Biden went into hiding on July 17 following his diagnosis with COVID-19, opting to retreat to one of his homes in Delaware. Just four days after his diagnosis, he issued a statement on Twitter, announcing his withdrawal from the race. He provided little explanation, stating that he would address the nation at a later time, which he did on Wednesday. However, in the preceding weeks, Democrats and their allies had been closely monitoring him, urging him to step down due to concerns about his health and fitness.

Republicans responded to the news by calling on the president to resign, attempting to take things a step further.

According to strategists, however, a Biden resignation would undoubtedly create a wave of excitement around Harris. The anticipated uptick in enthusiasm, coupled with her incumbency, could very well be the momentum she needs to clinch a victory in November.

Among the Republicans making those calls were J.D. Vance, Rep. Elise Stefanik, the House’s No. 3 Republican, and Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, all key figures in the party.

“It’ll be a complete earned media overload. And there’ll be all these Madam President T-shirts and all this kind of stuff. I mean, we know what’s going to happen if she were to become the president. This is why — what they should have done two years ago was move him out and put her in and let her be an incumbent with two years under her belt right now,” Cahaly told the Caller. “That’s what they should have done, and they didn’t do it. But no, I think the Republicans need to just be quiet.”
