The Department of Defense is eliminating transgender members of the military by cutting and disqualifying them.
A Pentagon memo that was revealed in court on Wednesday ordered a review of service members who identify as transgender or who have a past diagnosis of gender dysphoria, Axios reported.
“Service members who have a current diagnosis or history of, or exhibit symptoms consistent with, gender dysphoria will be processed for separation from military service,” it said.
It said that waivers would be decided on a “case-by-case basis” when there is “a compelling government interest in retaining the service member that directly supports warfighting capabilities,”
But, it said, that in order to qualify for a waiver the service member must never have attempted to transition.
And they must also have demonstrated “36 consecutive months of stability in the Service member’s sex without clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.”
The memo comes after President Donald Trump rescinded an executive order from his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, that banned “[d]iscrimination on the basis of gender identity” in the military.
“Consistent with the military mission and longstanding DoD policy, expressing a false “gender identity” divergent from an individual’s sex cannot satisfy the rigorous standards necessary for military service. Beyond the hormonal and surgical medical interventions involved, adoption of a gender identity inconsistent with an individual’s sex conflicts with a soldier’s commitment to an honorable, truthful, and disciplined lifestyle, even in one’s personal life. A man’s assertion that he is a woman, and his requirement that others honor this falsehood, is not consistent with the humility and selflessness required of a service member,” the order said.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth this month ordered the military to stop transgender surgeries and treatments for military members, ABC News reported.
“Effective immediately, all new accessions for individuals with a history of gender dysphoria are paused, and all unscheduled, scheduled, or planned medical procedures associated with affirming or facilitating a gender transition for Service members are paused,” Hegseth’s memo said.
“Individuals with gender dysphoria have volunteered to serve our country and will be treated with dignity and respect,” it said.
It also said that the Department of Defense would provide “additional policy and implementation guidance” to members of the military “with a current diagnosis or history of gender dysphoria.”
