The Trump administration rolled out a new unit on Friday that will focus on schools letting biological males compete in girls’ sports or use women’s facilities. It’s will push back hard on gender policies in schools and make sure Trump’s orders are followed.
The Department of Education and Department of Justice said the new Title IX Special Investigations Team (SIT) will deal with these cases quickly. Education Secretary Linda McMahon said they’re doing this because the regular Office for Civil Rights takes way too long, reports Fox.
“OCR under this Administration has moved faster than it ever has, and the Title IX SIT will ensure even more rapid and consistent investigations,” McMahon said. “To all the entities that continue to allow men to compete in women’s sports and use women’s intimate facilities: there’s a new sheriff in town. We will not allow you to get away with denying women’s civil rights any longer.”
The team will include staff from both agencies, like attorneys and investigators, and will send cases to the DOJ when needed. McMahon said the unit will help protect girls and women from unfair treatment in schools and sports.
“Protecting women and women’s sports is a key priority for this Department of Justice,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said. “This collaborative effort with the Department of Education will enable our attorneys to take comprehensive action when women’s sports or spaces are threatened and use the full power of the law to remedy any violation of women’s civil rights.”
The unit includes people from the Office for Civil Rights, DOE legal teams, privacy and enforcement teams, and DOJ civil rights lawyers. They’ll use Trump’s executive orders like “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” and “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism” to guide their work.
The new team comes after Trump has had fights with some state leaders over his orders. In February, Trump clashed with Democratic Governor Janet Mills of Maine, saying she wasn’t following his order by letting biological men compete in girls’ sports. The Trump administration then started investigating Maine’s education department.
The USDA also froze some school funding in Maine over the issue. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said that money could come back if the state follows federal rules.
This move comes after President Joe Biden changed Title IX rules in 2021 and 2022 to cover gender identity and sexual orientation. That meant “transgender” students were protected in sports and other school activities under his administration.
