NYC Man With Eight Previous Arrests Kills Two, Injures One In Stabbing Spree: Police

A knife-wielding suspect with a history of multiple arrests killed two men and critically injured a woman on Monday in a series of unprovoked attacks across New York City, according to officials.

The woman, who was initially taken to Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition, later succumbed to her injuries, The New York Post reported late Monday.

The alleged assailant, Ramon Rivera, a 51-year-old homeless man with eight prior arrests, was apprehended after a vigilant cab driver alerted authorities, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives Joe Kenny.

“Today, we have three innocent New Yorkers, just going about their lives, who were the victim of a terrible, terrible assault,” Kenny said.

During a news briefing, Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that investigators are not searching for additional suspects.

The attack spree began at approximately 8:20 a.m. when a 36-year-old man was stabbed in the stomach while standing outside a construction site on 19th Street. The victim was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two hours later, a 68-year-old man fishing on 30th Street near the FDR Drive was stabbed multiple times. He, too, died at Bellevue Hospital.

The third attack occurred about 30 minutes later near the United Nations building on East 42nd Street and First Avenue. A 36-year-old woman was stabbed multiple times.

“As of right now, these attacks seemed to be unprovoked,” said Kenny. “He just walked up to them and began to attack them with the knives.”

Shortly after the third incident, a cab driver who witnessed the attack mistook it for a robbery and reported the suspect to police. Rivera was soon taken into custody.

Police recovered large kitchen knives, stained with blood, along with Rivera’s blood-covered clothing.

“I just heard a commotion. Stepped outside and heard what people were saying and reacted,” the officer who detained Rivera told reporters.

Rivera was questioned at a police precinct, while Mayor Adams condemned the attacks as a “clear, clear example of the criminal justice system, mental health system that continues to fail New Yorkers.”
