A career Department of Justice prosecutor dismissed a criminal case on January 21 against a major Democratic donor accused of orchestrating a $150 million fraud involving a green-energy firm, The Daily Wire has learned.
The case was dropped one day after President Donald Trump took office but before his administration could appoint a U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California.
Ibrahim AlHusseini, a self-styled environmentalist entrepreneur and Hollywood socialite, donated more than $300,000 to Democrats and was a key investor in Aspiration Inc., a “socially conscious” finance firm backed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, the outlet reported.
A longtime CodePink board member, AlHusseini had been hailed as an example that “reversing the climate crisis can be profitable.” However, according to the FBI, he falsified financial documents, inflating their value by nearly $200 million.
AlHusseini was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport on October 7 and held in jail after prosecutors deemed him a “serious flight risk.” His alleged victim claimed that AlHusseini had already transferred $300 million to his native Saudi Arabia, raising concerns that he might flee the country.
However, in December, AlHusseini was released after wealthy environmentalists, including CodePink co-founder Jodie Evans, put up their homes as collateral for his bail.
But in a stunning move, Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph McNally dismissed the case without explanation, exploiting the brief window between the resignation of Joe Biden’s U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California and the appointment of President Trump’s replacement, which has yet to occur.
A one-paragraph filing said “the Acting United States Attorney having moved for a dismissal of the complaint by the presentment of this Order, IT IS HEREBY ORDERED that said Complaint be dismissed as to defendant IBRAHIM AMEEN ALHUSSEINI only without prejudice and that … bond, if any, be exonerated.”
Dismissing the case without prejudice means that Trump’s Justice Department could reinstate the charges against Ibrahim AlHusseini. However, by ending the bond, AlHusseini would have the opportunity to leave the country first—without jeopardizing the homes of the prominent left-wing figures who secured his release.
Both Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, where AlHusseini recently listed an address, lack extradition treaties with the United States, making it more difficult for authorities to bring him back if he flees.
Connor Williams, a spokesman for McNally, would not explain why charges were dropped, saying “We have no comment at this time.”
