Butler, Pennsylvania Man Charged for Online Threats Against President Trump

A man from Butler, Pennsylvania — the same town where an attempt on Donald Trump’s life happened last July — is facing serious charges after allegedly making online threats to kill the president and other public officials.

According to the Department of Justice, 32-year-old Shawn Monper was arrested by the FBI with help from the Butler Township Police Department. He is currently being held and has a hearing scheduled for April 14.

On April 8, the FBI’s National Threat Operations Section received an emergency tip about threats from a YouTube user called “Mr Satan.” Investigators say the threats were posted between January 15 — just five days before Trump returned to office — and April 5. After digging into the account, agents tied the online activity to Monper’s home address.

Investigators also learned that Monper got a firearms permit shortly after Trump’s inauguration. Using the “Mr Satan” account, he allegedly posted in February, “I have bought several guns and been stocking up on ammo since Trump got in office.” In March, he added, “Eventually im going to do a mass shooting,” followed by another comment a week later: “I have been buying 1 gun a month since the election, body armor, and ammo.”

The complaint outlines more threats, including one made on February 17:
“Nah, we just need to start killing people, Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way. Remember, we are the majority, MAGA is a minority of the country, and by the time its time to make the move, they will be weakened, many will be crushed by these policies, and they will want revenge too. American Revolution 2.0.”

On March 4, Monper allegedly wrote, “im going to assassinate him myself” in a comment under a video titled “Live: Trump’s address to Congress.”

More alleged threats followed. On March 18, Monper reportedly wrote, “ICE are terrorist people, we need to start killing them,” and on April 1, “If I see an armed ice agent, I will consider it a domestic terrorist, and an active shooter and open fire on them.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi praised law enforcement for taking swift action:
“I want to applaud the outstanding and courageous investigative work of the FBI and the Butler Township Police Department, who thankfully identified and apprehended this individual before he could carry out his threats against President Trump’s life and the lives of other innocent Americans. Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law and seek the maximum appropriate punishment.”

Butler made national headlines in July 2024 when shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks opened fire from a nearby rooftop during a Trump rally. Trump was struck in the ear, and one person in the crowd was killed.
