NYPD Arrests Five Illegal Immigrants After Assault at Randall's Island Shelter

NYPD officers apprehended five men at the Randall’s Island illegal immigrant shelter early Monday morning after they allegedly attacked another man in his bed and injured a security guard during the altercation, according to authorities and local media.

The incident occurred around 2 a.m. at the shelter on East 125th Street, where the five suspects, aged between 20 and 33, are accused of assaulting a man while he was eating in his bed. According to police, the group surrounded the victim and proceeded to punch, scratch, and “hit him all over his head and face,” as well as on his legs, Fox reports.

The five men are facing charges of third-degree assault and harassment. They have been identified as Howard Ochoa-Olivero, 27, Jose Manuel-Maza, 29, Jose Sequera, 20, Xavier Pacheco, 33, and Carlos Maiz-Betancourt, 27.

The victim’s identity has not been disclosed.

Videos from the scene depict a significant police presence outside the shelter, with suspects being led away in handcuffs and at least two individuals being transported in ambulances. Reports indicate that a security guard at the shelter was injured while attempting to intervene in the attack.

“It’s becoming common practice” at the building, a law enforcement source informed Fox News Digital.

This gang assault follows Mayor Eric Adams’ recent implementation of a curfew at the shelter and considerations for installing metal detectors, prompted by multiple stabbing incidents at the facility in recent weeks.

In February, two other illegal immigrants were arrested at the same location for allegedly assaulting a security guard in two separate altercations on the same evening. Police responding to a 911 call for the initial assault witnessed the second altercation, wherein an illegal immigrant attacked the security guard while officers were present, as reported by the New York Post.
