A traffic stop in Colorado last month led to the arrest of two Mexican nationals after authorities discovered a massive stockpile of ammunition in their vehicle.
According to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Colorado, 41-year-old Caesar Ramon Martinez Solis and 24-year-old Humberto Ivan Amador Gavira were arrested on March 26 in Cañon City. Both men were in the U.S. on nonimmigrant visas.
Fremont County detectives stopped the two after spotting a white Chevrolet van that failed to dim its headlights, didn’t signal while turning into a gas station, and had a faulty license plate light. During the stop, law enforcement found around 150 boxes of .308 ammunition and 30 boxes of 7.62 ammunition. Each box was marked as holding 1,000 rounds, totaling 180,000 rounds.
Martinez Solis reportedly waived his right to legal counsel and spoke to Homeland Security agents about the incident. He said that he and Amador Gavira, whom he described as his brother-in-law, had traveled from Mexico to Denver to buy a vehicle. From there, they drove to Salt Lake City to view another car, reports KSN.
In Salt Lake City, the men stopped at a store that sold firearms and ammunition. According to Martinez Solis, Amador Gavira purchased the ammunition found in their van.
“[Martinez Solis] further explained that he did not know the intent with the ammunition but that he believed it was destined for Pueblo,” the affidavit stated. Pueblo is located about two hours south of Denver. He also noted that the specific address was saved on Amador Gavira’s phone. Authorities have not released further details about the exact destination.
The two men have been charged with Unlawful Possession of Ammunition by Alien Admitted Under a Nonimmigrant Visa.
The investigation is being handled by the Denver Field Office of Homeland Security Investigations and the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office, with assistance from the Denver Field Office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Officials said the arrests are part of “Operation Take Back America,” a federal program aimed at dismantling criminal cartels and stopping illegal immigration.
