Former President Donald Trump will not be making his long-awaited return to Twitter after all. This news comes after the purchase of the large media platform by Space X and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who has described himself as a free-speech absolutist.
Trump said that rather than going back to Twitter, he would be using his own social network, TRUTH Social.
Trump made the comments in an exclusive statement to Fox News.
“I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on TRUTH,” Trump said on Monday, following the news. “I hope Elon buys Twitter because he’ll make improvements to it and he is a good man, but I am going to be staying on TRUTH.”
“We’re taking in millions of people, and what we’re finding is that the response on TRUTH is much better than being on Twitter,” Trump said. “Twitter has bots and fake accounts, and we are doing everything we can.”
“The bottom line is, no, I am not going back to Twitter,” he said.
The former president has been banished from the platform since January 8, 2021, days after the Capitol Hill riots.
Twitter defended its decision of Trump’s ban and he has not been able to use the platform since, stating: After close review of recent Tweets from the @realDonaldTrump account and the context around them — specifically how they are being received and interpreted on and off Twitter — we have permanently suspended the account due to the risk of further incitement of violence.
“In the context of horrific events this week, we made it clear on Wednesday that additional violations of the Twitter Rules would potentially result in this very course of action. Our public interest framework exists to enable the public to hear from elected officials and world leaders directly. It is built on the principle that the people have a right to hold power to account in the open.
“However, we made it clear going back years that these accounts are not above our rules entirely and cannot use Twitter to incite violence, among other things. We will continue to be transparent about our policies and their enforcement.
Truth Social is a social media platform created by Trump Media & Technology Group, an American media and technology company founded in October 2021 by Trump.
