President-elect Donald Trump has renewed his advocacy for the United States to acquire Greenland, sharing an entertaining post on social media Monday.
The announcement coincides with Donald Trump Jr.’s plans to travel to Greenland on Tuesday. According to reports, the trip will be personal in nature, with no meetings scheduled with government officials.
In a Truth Social post, President-elect Trump claimed he was “hearing that the people of Greenland are ‘MAGA’” and shared a video purportedly featuring a Greenlander expressing support for U.S. ownership of the island.
In the video, a woman asks a man wearing a MAGA hat, “If you could tell Trump anything, what would it be?” The man responds, “Buy us. Buy Greenland.”
He elaborates, saying he “loved Americans” and wished to break free from Danish control. “We don’t want to be colonized by Danish government anymore,” the man states. “We get ripped [off] every year [with] our minerals from Greenland. We are the richest nation in the world. And we don’t get to use it. Denmark’s using us too much.”
In the same post, Trump confirmed his intention to visit Greenland in the future and announced his son’s imminent trip to the region. He described Greenland as a land of “magnificent areas and sights” and emphasized the benefits of the island potentially becoming part of the United States.
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” Trump wrote. “We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
This post follows Trump’s earlier endorsement of acquiring Greenland, which made headlines two weeks ago. At that time, he argued that Greenland’s ownership by the U.S. was critical for “National Security and Freedom throughout the World.”
Greenland’s Prime Minister, Múte Egede, responded by expressing interest in his country’s independence from Denmark. “The upcoming new election period must, together with the citizens, create these new steps, based on the foundations that have already been created,” Egede said. “It is about time that we ourselves take a step and shape our future, also with regard to who we will cooperate closely with, and who our trading partners will be.”
The president-elect’s fascination with acquiring Greenland dates back to 2019, when he described the prospect as “a large real estate deal.”
At the time, Trump argued that Greenland posed a financial burden on Denmark, costing the country nearly $700 million annually. “Strategically for the United States, it would be nice,” Trump said, emphasizing Denmark’s dependence on U.S. defense support.
In a “Fox News Sunday” interview, then-White House Chief Economic Adviser Larry Kudlow affirmed Trump’s interest in Greenland. “Greenland is a strategic place up there, and they’ve got a lot of valuable minerals,” Kudlow stated. “The president, who knows a thing or two about buying real estate, wants to take a look.”
