President Donald Trump has been systematically addressing his campaign promises through executive orders, and his next target appears to be the Department of Education (DOE). While officially dismantling the agency would require congressional approval, Trump has shown a willingness to push forward with executive action since taking office on January 20.
“A White House official confirmed the White House is preparing for executive action later this month that will fulfill Trump’s campaign pledge to defund the department,” per the Washington Post.
Trump’s nominee for Education Secretary, Linda McMahon, has yet to undergo confirmation hearings in the Senate. However, by the time her hearing is scheduled, she may find herself overseeing the department’s decline rather than leading it in a traditional sense. The delay is reportedly due to the Office of Government Ethics still reviewing her paperwork, reports the Wall Street Journal.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s newly established Department of Government Efficiency has been reviewing DOE operations in an effort to reduce spending and cut staff. While an executive order cannot formally eliminate the department, it could significantly limit its functions.
According to the Washington Post, Congress is “unlikely” to completely dissolve the DOE. The department was originally established in 1980 under President Jimmy Carter after Congress passed legislation for its creation in 1979. However, a previous iteration of the Department of Education was launched in 1867 under President Andrew Johnson—only to be abolished by Congress a year later.
