President-elect Donald Trump has extended an invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration on January 20, 2025, in Washington, D.C. Whether Xi has accepted the invitation remains unclear.
CBS News first reported the story, citing multiple sources who stated, “Inauguration officials are making plans for additional foreign dignitaries to attend the swearing-in ceremony.” According to the report, Xi’s attendance would mark the first time a foreign leader has participated in an American presidential inauguration.
“World leaders are lining up to meet with President Trump because they know he will soon return to power and restore peace through American strength around the globe,” said Karoline Leavitt, a member of Trump’s transition team and the incoming administration’s press secretary.
The invitation reportedly followed Trump’s victory over Kamala Harris in the recent presidential election.
Trump has made it clear that his relationship with Xi will involve firm policies, including the potential for increased tariffs on Chinese exports to the U.S. During a recent Meet the Press interview, Trump revealed, “we’ve had a communication,” but refrained from providing further details.
The last face-to-face meeting between Trump and Xi occurred during the 2019 G20 summit in Japan, setting the stage for what could be a high-profile diplomatic event if Xi decides to attend.
