The Trump administration is reportedly taking steps to freeze federal so called “family-planning” grants to Planned Parenthood and similar organizations while it reviews whether these groups are complying with an executive order aimed at cutting funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs.

According to sources familiar with the situation, the freeze could be announced as early as this week. Planned Parenthood and other organizations were set to receive around $120 million this year from federal funding under Title X, which supports services such as pregnancy testing, cancer screenings, and STI treatment, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Planned Parenthood President Alexis McGill Johnson spoke out against the freeze, claiming, “The Trump-Vance-Musk administration wants to shut down Planned Parenthood health centers by any means necessary, and they’ll end people’s access to birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and more to do it.”

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed that it was reviewing the organizations receiving federal grants under Title X to ensure compliance with Trump’s executive orders, which address concerns about DEI funding. The department noted that Title X serves approximately four million people annually through a network of around 4,000 clinics nationwide.

This move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to undo the DEI initiatives started during the Biden administration. The president signed an executive order on his first day back in office, titled “Ending Radical And Wasteful Government DEI Programs And Preferencing,” which criticized the previous administration’s DEI policies. The order stated that the Biden administration had “forced illegal and immoral discrimination programs” into nearly every aspect of federal government operations, including areas like military and airline safety.

Trump’s order emphasized, “Americans deserve a government committed to serving every person with equal dignity and respect, and to expending precious taxpayer resources only on making America great.”
