A top prosecutor in the Washington D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office has resigned after declining to open an investigation into climate related projects during the era of former President Joe Biden.
Denise Cheung, who was the head of the criminal division for the U.S. Attorney’s office in DC, tendered her resignation letter to the new head of that office, U.S. attorney Ed Martin.
The letter came as Lee Zeldin, the new head of the Environmental Protection Agency, is looking to get back some of the money given out in green energy contracts right before he left the White House.
Zeldin found the funds in a Citibank account that were designated to be distributed as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, which, was more of a Green New Deal piece of legislation than it was about reducing inflation.
In her letter Cheung said she “took point” on directing Citibank to freeze the funds but would not go further than that.
“[B]ased upon the evidence I have reviewed, I still do not believe that there is sufficient evidence to issue the letter you described, including sufficient evidence to tell the bank that there is probable cause to seize the particular accounts identified. Because I believed that I lacked the legal authority to issue such a letter, I told you that I would not do so. You then asked for my resignation,” she said in her letter.
In a Fox News interview Zeldin said he is doing what the American people voted for.
“What the American public voted for was having a government that would be better stewards of tax dollars, caring about the economy, unleashing energy dominance, making sure that taxes are lowered, and the cost of living in America goes down,” the new head of the EPA said when he spoke to Fox News on Tuesday.
