Rumors Swirl That Trudeau May Step Down After Deputy Prime Minister’s Sudden Resignation

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is dealing with one of the most significant challenges of his political career after the unexpected resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, who has been one of his most influential and steadfast alliesm.

Freeland, who also served as deputy prime minister, announced her departure from the Cabinet on Monday, citing irreconcilable differences with Trudeau over Canada’s economic strategy and the government’s handling of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s impending administration.

This shocking development has raised doubts about Trudeau’s ability to remain in office as he nears a decade in power. His government is under mounting pressure due to waning public approval over inflation, immigration concerns, and strained U.S.-Canada relations. Opposition leader Jagmeet Singh, whose New Democratic Party Trudeau’s Liberals rely on for support, has called for his resignation, while the Conservative Party is demanding an election.

Freeland revealed in her resignation letter that Trudeau informed her last Friday of his decision to remove her as finance minister, offering her a different, less influential role in the Cabinet. She rejected the proposal, stating that her only “honest and viable path” was to resign.

“For the past number of weeks, you and I have found ourselves at odds about the best path forward for Canada,” Freeland wrote in her resignation letter.

The disagreement between Trudeau and Freeland reportedly centered on recently announced economic measures, including a two-month sales tax holiday and $250 Canadian ($175) payments to citizens. Freeland criticized these initiatives, arguing that Canada should avoid “costly political gimmicks” in light of Trump’s threat to impose sweeping 25% tariffs on Canadian exports.

“Our country is facing a grave challenge,” Freeland stated. “That means keeping our fiscal powder dry today, so we have the reserves we may need for a coming tariff war.”

According to a senior Liberal Party official, Freeland was offered a symbolic role as minister in charge of Canada-U.S. relations, which would not have included a department or significant authority. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Freeland found the position unacceptable given her extensive experience negotiating trade agreements with the United States.

Freeland’s resignation is a severe setback for Trudeau, particularly as she was set to deliver the fall economic statement, which likely would have included measures to counteract Trump’s proposed tariffs. These tariffs, coupled with demands to curb the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs, present a formidable challenge for Trudeau’s administration.

Although Trudeau has expressed his intention to lead the Liberal Party into the next election, growing discontent within his party suggests his leadership may not be secure. Freeland’s departure has further eroded confidence in his government, as some Liberal members reportedly oppose him running for a fourth term.

Opposition Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre criticized Trudeau’s handling of the situation, saying, “Justin Trudeau has lost control, but he’s hanging onto power. All this chaos, all this division, all this weakness is happening as our largest neighbor and closest ally is imposing 25% tariffs under a recently elected Trump with a strong mandate, a man who knows how to identify weakness.”
