Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Russia and Ukraine only have “a matter of days” to make progress on peace talks before the United States walks away from the negotiations.
The peace negotiations have been stalled and President Donald Trump’s administration has become frustrated.
“So we came here yesterday to sort of begin to talk about more specific outlines of what it might take to end the war, to try to figure out very soon,” the secretary of state said to reporters in Paris. “And I’m talking about a matter of days, not a matter of weeks – whether or not this is a war that can be ended. If it can, we’re prepared to do whatever we can to facilitate that and make sure that it happens, that it ends in a durable and just way.”
“If it’s not possible – if we’re so far apart that this is not going to happen – then I think the president’s probably at a point where he’s going to say, well, we’re done,” he said. “We’ll do what we can on the margins. We’ll be ready to help whenever you’re ready to have peace. But we’re not going to continue with this endeavor for weeks and months on end.”
The comments came days after Steve Witkoff, the United States Special Envoy to the Middle East, said he was optimistic about a peace deal.
“I think we might be on the verge of something that would be very, very, important for the world at large,” he said to Fox News host Sean Hannity this week.
“There’s a lot of detail attached to it,” he said after what was close to a five-hour meeting. “It’s a complicated situation rooted in some real problematic things happening between the two countries.”
“I believe there is a possibility to reshape the Russian-United States relationship through some very compelling commercial opportunities that give real stability to the region,” he said. “Partnerships create stability.”
