RFK Jr. Holds Key Meetings with Senators Amid HHS Confirmation Prospects

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is set to meet with over a dozen senators in the coming days, including top progressives such as Sens. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., and Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as well as other members of the Democratic caucus, Fox News reports.

President-elect Donald Trump announced last year that Kennedy was his choice to head the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) in his upcoming administration. Since the announcement, Kennedy has been actively engaging with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to secure support for his confirmation.

Until now, Kennedy’s outreach had been focused solely on Republican senators. Starting Wednesday, he will broaden his efforts to include key Democratic caucus members, such as Sens. Catherine Cortez-Masto (Nevada), John Fetterman (Pennsylvania), Maggie Hassan (New Hampshire), Ed Markey (Massachusetts), Michael Bennet (Colorado), Mark Warner (Virginia), Elizabeth Warren, and Bernie Sanders.

Some Democrats have expressed a willingness to consider Kennedy’s positions, particularly on agriculture and food production. However, these same stances could pose challenges among certain Republicans.

Kennedy is also scheduled to meet with GOP senators, including Sens. Jim Banks (Indiana), Bill Cassidy (Louisiana), Susan Collins (Maine), John Cornyn (Texas), and Chuck Grassley (Iowa).

Grassley and other Republicans have voiced concerns about Kennedy’s views on agriculture, particularly regarding modern farming techniques and the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and genetic engineering.

“They’ve got to be able to use modern farming techniques,” said Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., noting the need for advanced tools and methods to support farmers and meet food demands.

Despite these concerns, some Republicans remain optimistic about Kennedy’s approach. Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., noted that during their meeting last year, Kennedy appeared “very on board” with supporting farmers and avoiding excessive regulations. “He understands our farmers are in trouble, and we want to make sure that we have farmers that can make a living,” Tuberville said.

After endorsing Trump ahead of the 2024 election, Kennedy joined the president-elect in launching their campaign slogan, “Make America Healthy Again.” This initiative has been embraced by a group of Senate Republicans advocating for Kennedy’s confirmation and supporting Trump’s health-focused policies.
