On Thursday, the House of Representatives approved a bill targeting the deportation of illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes, with more than 140 Democrats voting against the measure.
The legislation passed with bipartisan support in a 274-145 vote, with every Republican present backing the bill and all opposition coming from Democratic lawmakers. Originally introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., during the 118th Congress, the bill had previously stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate. In its earlier iteration, 158 Democrats opposed the measure, Fox reports.
“Our country has been ravaged by a horror of illegal immigrants… violently raping American women and girls,” Mace said during the floor debate. “I know the lifelong scars, the irreversible scars, these heinous crimes leave behind.”
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has emerged as a prominent supporter of the common-sense legislation, openly criticizing lawmakers who voted against it. “There is no excuse. Please post the list of people who opposed this law and want to keep illegals who are convicted sex offenders in America,” Musk posted on X, formerly Twitter. “They all need to be voted out of office. Every one of them.”
The bill extends beyond deporting immigrants convicted of sex crimes, as it also declares illegal immigrants who admit to, or are convicted of, domestic violence or sex-related charges to be inadmissible in the U.S.
Critics, primarily from the Democratic Party, argued that the bill could harm survivors of domestic abuse, especially those who retaliate against abusers. They also raised concerns about the legislation’s broad definitions and its potential to discourage crime reporting among immigrant communities.
Progressive Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., criticized the bill during the debate, stating that it “does absolutely nothing to address the needs of the American people” and accusing it of advancing former President Trump’s “mass deportation plans.” She added that the legislation could “create a chilling effect for reporting future crimes” and “empower abusers to go after immigrant women and children.”
Mace took to X to respond to Democratic opposition, writing, “The Left justifying why they are against deporting rpists, pdeophiles, and m*rderers who are here ILLEGALLY, never ceases to amaze me.”
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, R-Minn., also condemned Democrats who voted against the measure, highlighting the sharp divide over the legislation.
