A Texas teenager accused of murder was released from custody after his bond was significantly reduced from $800,000 to $100 per charge.
Stephon Martin Morson, 19, was released from the Travis County Jail in Austin on Saturday after posting bail. Morson is accused in the shooting death of 20-year-old Keshawn Cage, who was found by police with a gunshot wound to the head in October.
Morson was initially booked on November 6, 2024, and charged with murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence. His bond was originally set at $800,000, but it was recently lowered to $100 for each charge, totaling $200. Conditions of his release require him to wear a GPS monitor, remain under house arrest, and avoid contacting the victim’s family or potential witnesses, CBS Austin reported.
Michael Bullock, President of the Austin Police Association, criticized the decision, calling it “not enough.” He told Fox News Digital, “For a man accused of murder to have his bond reduced so low that he’s able to walk free is a slap in the face to Austinites who could potentially become the next victim. The revolving door of violent criminals constantly released back onto the streets of Austin is exactly why we have seen violent crime increase.”
Bullock also expressed concerns about the broader trend of reduced bonds for violent offenders. “This is not exclusive to just one judge. This has happened across multiple different courts,” he said. “We’ve had some where they may not reoffend, but then we’ve had others who do reoffend.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the move, calling it “outrageous.” He also referenced his push for bail reform, which he declared an emergency item for the legislative session. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick echoed Abbott’s concerns and voiced his support for the bail reform initiative, stressing the need to prevent violent offenders from being released on bond.
