The New York Times faced cause controversy when it referred to biological women as “non-transgender women” in a story.
The story was titled “How a Women’s College Volleyball Team Became the Center of the Transgender Athlete Debate,” which was about San Jose State University’s star player, a man masquerading as a woman.
“On its website, the N.C.A.A. says trans volleyball players are eligible to play if their testosterone level is less than 10 nanomoles per liter — that’s at least four times more than what many experts say is the top of the range for non-transgender women, and in the typical range for adult men,” the story said.
The story explained that = the normal testosterone level for an adult male which decreases with age is 10-35 nanomoles per liter.
It said that, on its own, it could be cause to show that a biological man has an advantage over a woman.
But it was how the newspaper referred to biological women that caused consternation among some readers.
“On its website, the N.C.A.A. says trans volleyball players are eligible to play if their testosterone level is less than 10 nanomoles per liter — that’s at least four times more than what many experts say is the top of the range for non-transgender women [emphasis added], and in the typical range for adult men,” the Times reported.
“Hey @nytimes. Don’t call us ‘non-transgender women.’ Just stop it. Stop all the offensive terms for us: birthing parent; uterus haver; menstruator; vaginal presenting (from the Olympus spa hearing). We are WOMEN!” the account Women Are Real said on X.
“NYT — you stink. We are women, not NOT TRANSGENDER WOMEN. Just WOMEN will do in the future,” legendary tennis player Martina Navratilova said.
“WOW — A NEW LOW FROM THE NEW YORK TIMES. Referring to Women now as ‘Non-Transgender Women.’ This othering is typical of a liberal rag like this. Another once proud publication has been completely captured by the woke ideology,” another X user said.
“Imaging committing so fully to Orwellian Newspeak that you abandon the language that applies to 99% of the world in favor of new terms that elevate the 1%,” another said.
“Billions of women aren’t women. They’re reduced to simply everyone else who ISN’T that 1%. They’re ‘non-transgender women,’” they said.
