Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain—known as a “maverick” within the GOP—has seemingly softened her stance toward President Donald Trump as he begins his second term.
Both McCains had a significant falling out with Trump during his 2016 campaign after Trump insulted the elder McCain’s military service and his years as a POW enduring brutal treatment in North Vietnam. However, in a post to the X platform this week, McCain explained that while she still had “personal” issues regarding Trump, she not only appreciated his policies but also supported many of his Cabinet picks.
“I am sorry some of you are so disappointed I never became a Liz Cheney/never trump/resistance figure. I will always have my personal issues with Trump but I do support and am grateful for many of the much needed policy changes his administration is implementing,” she began.
“I also, as you know support and admire many of his cabinet members. I choose to live in the real world and accept the reality of the political landscape we live in. Nothing productive comes from screaming your head off on CNN and calling everyone who voted for Trump racist and ignorant. It also just isn’t accurate,” she wrote.
“I also don’t understand people who think their worldview is the only world view that exists and the most cruel, close minded, awful people I’ve ever worked with or encountered were progressive democrats,” she continued.
McCain concluded: “I have lived my entire adult life a proud, outspoken conservative woman, and Trump never changed or morphed that, unlike it did for so many others who abandoned their principles.”
Trump has had a notably active—and many consider it successful—first week in office to begin his second and final term, concluding on a high note. In a surprising development, New Jersey, a state long regarded as a Democratic stronghold, is experiencing an unexpected political shift. A recent poll indicates that President Trump now holds a higher favorability rating than Democratic Governor Phil Murphy.
The Emerson College Polling/PIX11/The Hill survey for the 2025 New Jersey gubernatorial race shows Trump with a 48% favorable rating among state voters, compared to 46% who view him unfavorably and 6% who remain neutral.
In contrast, Murphy has a 44% favorable rating, 42% unfavorable, 12% neutral, and 2% unfamiliar with him.
This marks a significant change in New Jersey’s political landscape, as observed in the 2024 presidential election. Vice President Kamala Harris carried New Jersey by just 5.9 percentage points over Trump—a substantial decrease from President Joe Biden’s commanding 16-point victory in 2020.
This election outcome represents the closest a Republican has come to flipping the state since 1992.
