Mayor Eric Adams Says New York Has a "Gun Epidemic"

A single mother was shot and killed execution-style in New York City yesterday night, while she was with her three-month-old baby.

The victim, Azsia Johnson, 20, was murdered on a sidewalk in New York’s Upper East Side at 8 pm near a playground, the New York Post reports

A hooded suspect approached Johnson and “fired a single shot into her head from a very close range,” NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell told media during a press conference.

New York Mayor Eric Adams blamed the attack on an oversaturation of guns.

“This shows just how this national problem is impacting families and doesn’t matter if you are on the Upper East Side or East New York, Brooklyn,” he added, vowing to “find this person that is guilty of this horrific crime … and bring him to justice,” said Adams, who said that there was an “epidemic” of guns in his city.

“More guns in our city means more lives lost. It means more babies crying as those who love them lie dead,” he said in a tweet. “We cannot allow this epidemic to keep claiming lives.”

The victim’s mother has described her daughter as a survivor of domestic abuse, who was previously attacked while pregnant.

She survived harassment from the baby’s father, which Johnson reported to polce.

“The city was supposed to be protecting her… This is a domestic violence case from January. We called the precinct.”

“All that anyone needs to know in this city is we called numerous times for her protection,”Desort said. “No one protected my daughter, and now she’s dead.”

A person of interest has been identified and police are looking into links to the domestic violence incidents.

The baby’s father has not been named a suspect in the incident.
