Lara Trump, President-elect Donald Trump’s daughter-in-law and the outgoing co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC), announced on Saturday that she will not be considered as a potential replacement for outgoing Republican Florida Senator Marco Rubio.

“After an incredible amount of thought, contemplation, and encouragement from so many, I have decided to remove my name from consideration for the United States Senate,” Lara Trump, 42, said on the X platform.

Her announcement signals a change from her previous intention to consider being in the running to replace Rubio, whom Trump picked to be the Secretary of State.

“It is something I would seriously consider,” Lara Trump had told The Associated Press (AP). “If I’m being completely transparent, I don’t know exactly what that would look like. And I certainly want to get all of the information possible if that is something that’s real for me. But yeah, I would 100% consider it.”

She had previously announced her decision to step down as RNC co-chair, fueling speculation that she might be a contender to replace Senator Rubio. And she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve as RNC co-chair “during the most high-stakes election of our lifetime” and extended her thanks to Floridians for their support.

“I do have a big announcement that I’m excited to share in January, so, stay tuned,” she added.

Lara also said she would welcome the opportunity to return to public service. “In the meantime, I wish [Republican Florida] Governor [Ron] DeSantis the best of luck with this appointment,” she added.

If the Senate confirms Rubio as Secretary of State, Governor DeSantis will appoint his successor, who will serve until the 2026 midterm elections, according to the Associated Press. Rubio’s replacement could be named as early as January 2025, given his likely confirmation.

Lara Trump faced a similar situation in 2021 when she announced her decision not to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Republican North Carolina Senator Richard Burr, The Hill reported. Instead, she endorsed Republican North Carolina Representative Theodore Budd, effectively quelling speculation about her potential candidacy.

“I am saying no for now, not no forever,” she said at the time, adding that it would be “very hard” to pursue a congressional career while raising her two young children, now aged seven and five.
