White House Heeds Elon Musk's Warning on Dangers of AI

The White House announced on Tuesday that it will take action to address the advancement of AI technology, which the likes of Elon Musk and other AI leaders have warned needs to be slowed to preserve the future of humanity, Fox News reports.

A White House official stated that the Chief of Staff office is leading the process to develop decisive measures in the coming weeks. White House principals have been engaging in regular discussions, meeting two to three times a week, alongside daily efforts across various departments and agencies.

“White House principals have met to discuss this issue 2-3 times a week in addition to ongoing daily work being done across the White House and agencies,” the official added. “White House officials are also working on securing commitments from leading AI companies to combat challenges from the government and the private sector side.”

The officials are also working towards securing commitments from leading AI companies to tackle challenges from both the government and private sectors.

President Biden was scheduled to convene a panel of AI experts in San Francisco to explore the opportunities and drawbacks associated with this technology.

The administration has been proactive in establishing safeguards around AI, taking steps such as engaging in meetings with top AI CEOs and presenting a blueprint for an AI bill of rights.

The Office of Management and Budget has been assigned the task of drafting policy guidance to fulfill this objective. President Biden himself is expected to deliver a speech at 4 p.m. ET, emphasizing his administration’s dedication to seizing the opportunities presented by AI while effectively managing the associated risks.

Notable participants in the AI meeting include Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, Fei-Fei Li, head of Stanford University’s Human-Centered AI Institute, and Joy Buolamwin, founder of the Algorithmic Justice League. Vice President Kamala Harris, who was appointed as the administration’s AI czar earlier this year, will not be present at the meeting or the subsequent speech, as indicated by the released guidance for her and President Biden’s schedules.
