A man from India accused of being tied to a violent terrorist group has been arrested by U.S. immigration officers after living illegally in the country for over two years.
Harpreet Singh, who is on India’s most-wanted list for alleged involvement in terrorism, including planning grenade attacks on police officers, was taken into custody on April 16 in Sacramento, California. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed the arrest, according to the New York Times.
Singh first entered the United States illegally on January 27, 2022, crossing the southern border near Arizona. He was picked up by Border Patrol agents in the Tucson sector and placed into deportation proceedings. Despite being flagged, he was later released into the country.
“The Biden Administration not only let a wanted terrorist into our country, but after he was arrested by Border Patrol agents, they released him into the interior of our country,” said Tricia McLaughlin, the Homeland Security assistant secretary for public affairs.
“While shocking, it’s not surprising given the Biden administration routinely released unvetted terrorists and criminals into American communities,” she added. “Under President Trump and Secretary Noem’s leadership, ICE is unleashed to remove these violent criminals from America’s streets and put an end to catch and release. We will hunt down, arrest, and lock up foreign terrorists and criminals who have operated with impunity on American soil.”
According to Indian authorities, Singh is believed to be linked to Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization that has carried out bombings, assassinations, and other violent attacks since the 1970s.
Indian intelligence officials say Singh was involved in helping fund and organize a grenade attack on a police station as well as an attempted attack on the home of a retired Punjab police officer. These actions were allegedly meant to spread fear among Indian law enforcement personnel.
He also faces accusations of running extortion schemes and other violent acts back in India.
Officials in India describe Singh as a senior figure in a broader terror network, with direct ties to Harwinder Singh Rinda, a well-known leader within the Pakistan-based BKI group.
Singh will remain in ICE custody as he faces immigration proceedings in the U.S. The Department of Homeland Security has not yet commented on whether Singh could be extradited to India.
BKI remains listed as a terrorist organization by the U.S. government.
