A man who had previously been deported was taken into custody in Florida after allegedly sexually assaulting a teenage boy during a game of hide-and-seek, according to local authorities.
Samuel Cobos-Carmona, 20, is facing serious charges after Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said he attacked a 13-year-old boy in the woods behind a relative’s home on April 13. According to Prummell, Cobos-Carmona had been playing with the victim and an 8-year-old child when the assault happened, reports WFLA.
“While in the woods with these two, he battered the teen, both orally and anally” Prummell said in a recorded statement released Thursday, Fox reports.
Cobos-Carmona was arrested on Monday and reportedly admitted to the crime. He is now charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a child between 12 and 16 years old, according to jail records.
Sheriff Prummell said the suspect first crossed into the United States illegally in 2021. After being deported back to Mexico, he returned in 2022 and managed to flee Texas law enforcement before eventually showing up in Florida.
In July 2024, he was located in Sarasota, but was released under the Biden administration’s catch-and-release policy, Prummell said.
“People often question why myself and my fellow sheriffs in the state of Florida are working with our federal partners to round individuals like this up to get them the hell out of here,” the sheriff said. “This is why.”
He also took aim at sanctuary cities and states that restrict cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration agencies.
“They ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Prummell said, accusing those jurisdictions of putting “the safety of criminal illegal immigrants over American citizens and children.”
The sheriff’s office said it plans to work with both local and federal prosecutors to make sure Cobos-Carmona stays behind bars and is deported once again if released.
