A leading Democratic House PAC has announced plans to spend $4 million in the final stretch of the election cycle to unseat a Republican incumbent in an otherwise traditionally Democratic state.
The House Majority PAC’s financial support marks the first significant partisan investment backing Sue Altman, former leader of the New Jersey Working Families Party, according to Huffington Post. Altman is running against Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., a supporter of former President Trump who was previously considered a moderate Republican during his time in the New Jersey state Senate.
Kean, buoyed by the district’s slightly more conservative leaning compared to other areas of New Jersey, as well as his family name recognition—he is the son of former Governor Tom Kean—seeks his first re-election after defeating former Rep. Tom Malinowski, D-N.J., in the last cycle.
The district stretches west along the Delaware River in Warren County, politically linked to the swing region of Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley. It then branches north toward the Delaware Water Gap and east along US-22 through rural areas before reaching the more Democratic-leaning Newark suburbs, which include former President Trump’s Bedminster golf club.
Notably, this district is one of a few in the nation where both President Joe Biden and a Republican congressional candidate won in 2020.
The PAC’s first ad criticizes Kean for his pro-life stance during his time in Trenton, alleging he supported “extremist” abortion policies.
Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s America PAC has invested millions in ads favoring Kean, according to the New York Times.
A recent Monmouth Poll found Kean leading Altman by two points, within the margin of error. Kean’s strengths were on issues such as the economy, jobs, crime, and immigration, while Altman appealed more to voters on corruption and abortion, the survey revealed.
A spokesman for Kean’s campaign told NJ.com, “No amount of national Democrat money is going to spare Sue Altman from the consequences of her radical record,” and positioned Kean as a “moderate problem solver” while labeling Altman as a “professional activist.”
Altman’s campaign manager, Rob West, previously told NJ Spotlight News that polling suggests the race remains a “jump ball.”
The race has drawn significant attention, with New Jersey Gov. Philip Murphy reportedly urging House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., to support Altman via the House Majority PAC.
Kean’s seat is one of the few in New Jersey considered more favorable to Republicans. Prior to the district’s redrawing to include more New York City suburbs, another nearby seat, held by Democrat Josh Gottheimer, was represented by conservative Republican Scott Garrett for many years.
Additionally, Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., a former Democrat who switched parties, represents South Jersey’s Cape May region, a seat previously held by Republican Frank LoBiondo for 25 years. Rep. Christopher Smith, R-N.J., who has served the Jersey Shore area since 1981, is the longest-serving congressman in state history.
