Fox News host Martha MacCallum challenged Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona after he suggested that former President Donald Trump would sign a national abortion ban into law if he returned to the White House in January.
Trump has consistently stated that he does not support a national abortion ban, despite appointing three Supreme Court justices—Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett—who joined the majority opinion in the June 2022 ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade, returning the issue of abortion to the states.
MacCallum interjected when Kelly claimed that abortion was banned in Arizona during an Election Day interview.
“Abortion is not banned in Arizona,” MacCallum said. The senator quickly responded, “There is a 15-week ban with no exceptions for rape and incest.”
“But the issue is, if Donald Trump is back in the White House, he has previously said that given the opportunity, he will put in a nationwide abortion ban,” Kelly claimed, prompting MacCallum to interject, saying, “He didn’t say that. Senator, Senator, I’m sorry, he has not said that.”
Trump stated that he would oppose the pro-abortion Amendment 4 referendum in Florida, arguing that it went too far, while also expressing concerns about the state’s ban on abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy.
Kelly attempted to bring up past comments made by Trump on abortion, prompting MacCallum to counter by referencing past remarks from Vice President Kamala Harris, including her support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” during the 2020 campaign. MacCallum noted that Harris had reportedly reversed her stance on the issue for the 2024 campaign.
“Do you want to start talking about what Kamala Harris has previously said?” MacCallum asked.
“I thought we were talking about Donald Trump,” Kelly responded.
“[Trump] has made it clear he will not ban abortion as president,” MacCallum said, continuing the back-and-forth exchange. “Do you accept that as true?”
The two continued to argue over the issue.
“Kamala Harris has said, made it very clear, that given the opportunity, she’s going to bring back the rights and protections that people had under Roe vs. Wade, and Donald Trump has said previously that he would sign a nationwide abortion ban,” Kelly claimed.
“Just to be clear, he said he won’t sign an abortion ban,” MacCallum interjected again.
