Former AZ Dem Lawmaker Sentenced to One Year In Prison For Sexual Misconduct With Minor

Former Arizona state lawmaker Otoniel “Tony” Navarrete has been sentenced to one year in prison and 10 years of supervised release after being found guilty of sexual misconduct with a minor, a Maricopa County Superior Court judge ruled on Friday.

The sentencing comes after Navarrete was convicted by a split jury verdict in February, with one count of sexual misconduct with a child. However, he was found not guilty on charges of child molestation and having sexual conduct with a minor. A fourth charge of attempting to commit molestation of a child was dismissed by prosecutors.

The allegations against Navarrete stem from incidents dating back to 2019, when he was accused of inappropriate sexual conduct with a minor boy he had been living with over several years.

The misconduct allegedly began when the boy was 12 or 13 years old and continued until he was 15.

Navarrete resigned from his position following his arrest in August 2021, and he was replaced by then-State Rep. Raquel Terán.

The former lawmaker’s attorney plans to file an appeal against the sentencing. Navarrete, 35, served as the state representative for Arizona’s 30th District from 2016 to 2018 before being elected to the state Senate.
