Fox News contributor Ari Fleischer, who served as press secretary for former President George W. Bush, believes that President Donald Trump played his hand perfectly with tariffs.
The former press secretary spoke to Fox News host Bret Baier where he said that the president’s unpredictability is one of the keys to his success.
“I guess there’s a couple parts to this story. One is the messaging, you know, and how it’s been messaged and handled. The other is the substance,” the host said.
“President Trump said today he’s brought in, he believes, and they’ve listed $7 trillion in investment into the country. He believes that he’s going to make these big deals and he is putting the screws to China that he believes has been unfair to the U.S. for decades,” he said to Fleischer.
“You know, Brett, my advice to President Trump’s critics and to his allies is stop being surprised that Donald Trump does surprising things. That’s his M.O. On my favorite part of the news conference today, he was asked about statements of support and it’s made saying that this would not happen. There would not be a pause,” the press secretary said.
“There would not be negotiations. And his answer was, well, there are no negotiations until there are negotiations. It’s just what he said when he came down the escalator in 2015. He said American leaders have been too predictable and therefore we get taken advantage of and a key to being successful, especially in foreign policy, is not to be predictable. This is how this man operates. And we are so used to consistency,” Fleischer said.
“We want the status quo, except the American people don’t want the status quo. They want Washington to be changed, to be shook up. It’s a roll of the dice with these tariffs, but this is exactly what President Trump promised,” he said.
