The European Union will suspend its retaliatory tariffs on the United States following President Donald Trump’s Wednesday announcement to pause most tariffs on all nations except China.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on Thursday that the EU would implement a 90-day halt on its countermeasures to allow time for negotiations—a period matching the suspension period announced by Trump, during which he plans to work out more favorable trade deals with trading partners other than China.
In a statement posted on X, von der Leyen noted that the EU’s retaliatory tariffs could still be reinstated if the negotiations fail to produce a satisfactory agreement.
“We took note of the announcement by President Trump. We want to give negotiations a chance. While finalising the adoption of the EU countermeasures that saw strong support from our Member States, we will put them on hold for 90 days,” she said.
“If negotiations are not satisfactory, our countermeasures will kick in. Preparatory work on further countermeasures continues. As I have said before, all options remain on the table,” she added.
The announcement follows a 26-1 EU vote to impose tariffs on over $20 billion worth of U.S. goods. According to a copy of the retaliatory plan obtained by The Washington Post, American products such as soybeans, meat, iron, steel, textiles, tobacco, and ice cream could have faced tariffs of up to 25%.
Earlier on Thursday, von der Leyen welcomed Trump’s decision to pause most tariffs, calling it an “important step towards stabilizing the global economy.”
