Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is preparing to announce that retired Gen. Mark Milley will lose his personal security detail in retirement. Additionally, Milley could face a demotion if an inspector general investigation determines he acted to “undermine the chain of command” during Trump’s first term.
According to Fox News, Hegseth will soon confirm that Milley’s security protection will be revoked, and if sufficient evidence emerges from the inspector general’s findings, he will be stripped of a star. The Pentagon also intends to take down a second portrait of Milley from the building.
One portrait of Milley was already removed from the Pentagon last week, shortly after Trump returned to office. Reports indicate the second portrait is expected to be taken down as soon as tonight.
When asked about the reason behind these decisions, a senior Trump official stated, “There is a new era of accountability in the Defense Department under President Trump’s leadership—and that’s exactly what the American people expect.”
Milley served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2019 to 2023, under both Trump and Biden. Although he was appointed during the Trump administration, journalist Bob Woodward has written that Milley privately referred to Trump as “fascist to the core!” during a reception.
In another book, Woodward claimed Milley “shared with me his worries about Trump’s mental stability and control of nuclear weapons.” Prior to leaving office, Biden granted Milley a preemptive pardon. However, after assuming the presidency, Trump dismissed him along with multiple top officials who had served under Biden.
