The Biden-Harris administration revealed on Wednesday that residents in states devastated by Hurricane Helene will receive $750 in federal aid through FEMA. Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, made the announcement during a visit to Augusta, Georgia, a city severely impacted by the storm.
Harris praised Georgia Governor Brian Kemp for his leadership in responding to the crisis, acknowledging his efforts to aid those most affected. The hurricane caused widespread destruction across the southeast, damaging infrastructure, tearing roofs from homes, and leaving many residents without communication due to downed power lines.
“I want to thank the governor for his leadership and his close coordination with the federal government, with our administration. And I want to thank the local leaders for together, creating a task-force-like response, knowing we are at our best when we work together and coordinate resources, coordinate our communications to the maximum effect for the community that has been impacted,” Harris stated.
Harris also announced that President Biden approved Gov. Kemp’s request for full federal reimbursement for costs to affected communities. Residents in need of immediate assistance are eligible to apply for the $750 FEMA aid.
However, the announcement sparked backlash on social media, with critics pointing out the “low” amount of aid being offered. Recent reports from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas revealed that FEMA lacks sufficient funds to last through the entire hurricane season. Many questioned the administration’s decision to allocate billions to foreign countries like Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as aid to illegal immigrants, while providing relatively small sums to American citizens in crisis.
Additionally, President Biden announced the deployment of Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites to help restore communication for hurricane victims. Despite the aid, controversy arose over the Biden administration’s 2022 decision to revoke a Starlink grant intended to serve 17 hurricane-ravaged counties in North Carolina, a move perceived as part of the administration’s disputes with Musk’s companies over free speech and censorship issues.
Musk responded by offering Starlink satellite services free of charge to hurricane victims, a measure that has already been implemented.
