A top DC political reporter took a swipe at his own colleagues during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner for their tragic coverage of former President Joe Biden’s mental decline during his presidency.
Axios reporter Alex Thompson took aim at the lack of coverage of the former president’s mental state in the months before his historic debate with President Donald Trump, when the entire world witnessed Biden as a shell of his former self.
“President Biden’s decline and its coverup by the people around him is a reminder that every White House, regardless of party, is capable of deception,” the reporter said before addressing his colleagues.
“But being truth tellers also means telling the truth about ourselves. We, myself included, missed a lot of this story. And some people trust us less because of it. We bear some responsibility for faith in the media being at such lows,” he said.
Some may say that they deserve the entire blame for the way Americans see the media, as polls show that trust in the media has hit a historic low.
But there was a smattering of applause for what he did admit to.
“I say this because acknowledging errors builds trust, and being defensive about them further erodes it,” the reporter said. “We should have done better.”
But even as he scolded the press corps for how they failed in their coverage of former President Biden, he still defended the Correspondents’ Association, as some have complained that President Donald Trump’s administration has wrestled some of its power away.
“I believe our mission is vital in a world where people are struggling to figure out what’s true, and people with power are not telling the truth,” the reporter said.
“I also believe that this association has been, is, and will continue to be critical to that mission,” he said.
