Attorney General Pam Bondi announced on Wednesday that a civil lawsuit has been filed against the state of Maine for its failure to uphold Title IX protections for women’s and girls’ spaces and sports.
In a pointed address, Bondi criticized Maine’s leadership, emphasizing that the Trump administration had made significant efforts to ensure compliance before resorting to legal action, the Daily Wire reported.
“We have no other choice, we are taking them to court,” Bondi said.
At the press conference, the AG was joined by Maine state lawmaker Rep. Laurel Libby (R), fencer Stephanie Turner, women’s rights advocate Riley Gaines, several female athletes from Maine, and other supporters.
A copy of the lawsuit, which Daily Wire reporter Mary Margaret Olohan obtained, says the United States is suing Maine over its Department of Education “openly and defiantly flouting federal anti-discrimination law by enforcing policies that require girls to compete against boys in athletic competitions designed exclusively for girls.”
The lawsuit aims to force Maine to cease its noncompliance with federal law and to provide proper compensation to females who were overlooked in favor of their male counterparts.
Bondi also indicated that the department is considering retroactively withdrawing funding previously provided to Maine as a consequence of its past noncompliance.
During the presser, Bondi cited a male athlete taking first place in a state final for girls’ pole vaulting. “He beat every female by a significant margin, qualifying him for regional championships. That took a spot away from a young woman,” Bondi said.
According to a DOJ press release, last year a male athlete competed in women’s ski and cross-country races in Maine and finished first in the women’s 5k. If he had been competing against other males, his time would have ranked 43rd.
