Minnesota State Senator Charged with First-Degree Burglary

A Democratic state senator in Minnesota, Nicole Mitchell, 49, faces a first-degree burglary charge following an incident involving her stepmother’s residence, where she allegedly attempted to retrieve belongings, including her late father’s ashes.

Mitchell was taken into custody and booked at the Becker County Jail after authorities responded to a burglary report at a residence in Detroit Lakes. Police Chief Steve Todd stated that Mitchell was found inside the home wearing black attire and a hat, carrying a backpack containing various items, including electronics and personal identification.

According to a criminal complaint, Mitchell purportedly entered through a window, claiming she sought sentimental possessions like her father’s ashes and photos. However, her stepmother allegedly denied access to these items.

Upon arrest, Mitchell reportedly addressed her stepmother, expressing her intent to retrieve her father’s belongings, citing communication issues between them, Fox News reports.

The complaint further alleges that one of the laptops found in Mitchell’s possession belonged to her stepmother, contradicting Mitchell’s claim.

Efforts to reach Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.

Mitchell, a Woodbury resident, has represented District 47 in the state Senate since her election in 2022. Prior to her political career, she worked as a meteorologist for local media outlets and serves as a lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.

The Senate Democratic Caucus abstained from commenting, awaiting further details, while Republican Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson expressed shock over the arrest.

Mitchell’s apprehension raises concerns for Democrats, holding a slim Senate majority with legislative sessions ongoing.

Further details regarding the incident and potential charges against Mitchell remain pending.
