Trump Grows In Popularity Among Youth Voters Ahead of 2024 Election

President Donald Trump is closing in on President Joe Biden’s lead among young voters, a recent poll indicates.

According to the latest Harvard Youth Poll released Thursday, Biden holds a 45 percent to 37 percent advantage over Trump among individuals aged 18 to 29, with 16 percent undecided. This 8 percentage point margin marks a significant reduction compared to the 23-point lead Biden held over Trump among young voters during the 2020 election.

When focusing on registered and likely voters, Biden maintains a wider lead over Trump. However, his 19-point advantage among likely voters under 30 is notably smaller than the 30-point lead he held over Trump four years ago.

While Biden enjoys substantial leads among likely voters who are non-white, women, and highly educated individuals, his margins are narrower among other key demographics. For instance, he leads Trump by just 6 percentage points among likely voters who are young men and 3 points among white voters. Among young people without college degrees, Biden and Trump are in a dead heat.

Trump’s support among younger voters appears to be more enthusiastic compared to Biden’s backers. Over three-quarters of Trump voters expressed enthusiastic support for the former president, while only 44 percent of Biden voters echoed the sentiment.

The nationwide survey, conducted by Ipsos Public Affairs between March 14 and 21, interviewed 2,010 Americans aged 18 to 29 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. According to John Della Volpe, polling director for the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics, young voters are motivated by different factors compared to previous elections, with economic and housing issues taking precedence.

Despite Trump’s gains among young voters, the poll suggests potential challenges for both candidates. Biden’s lead increases if Trump is convicted in any of his criminal trials, and third-party candidates could chip away at Biden’s margins. Additionally, Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict could impact his standing among young voters.
