WOW: Major Union Withholding Support For Biden Over His Radical Climate Agenda

President Joe Biden’s massive left-turn on the climate agenda has cost him the support of a major union that historically has reflexively backed Democratic candidates.

The United Auto Workers announced on Wednesday that the union is refraining from backing Biden over his electric vehicle policies.

Biden, who declared his candidacy for the presidency in 2024 last week, has proposed several initiatives aimed at increasing the adoption of electric vehicles in both the public and private sectors. However, the Detroit-based union, which boasts a membership of around 400,000 individuals, has expressed concern that these policies do not offer adequate job security guarantees for its members, the Daily Wire reported.

What’s more, the vast majority of Americans, according to polling, reject electric vehicles because the infrastructure does not exist to support them, they are unreliably short-ranged, and expensive.

“The federal government is pouring billions into the electric vehicle transition, with no strings attached and no commitment to workers,” United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain said in a memo published by Reuters. “The EV transition is at serious risk of becoming a race to the bottom. We want to see national leadership have our back on this before we make any commitments.”

According to the outlet, Fain held meetings last week with White House Chief of Staff Jeff Zients as well as several lawmakers. The union leader has publicly criticized Ultium Cells, a joint venture between automaker General Motors and battery manufacturer LG Energy Solutions, due to the fact that workers at a new plant in Ohio are currently being paid less than $17 per hour, while employees at a nearby former General Motors facility had earned over $32 per hour, the Daily Wire noted.

Fain added that the union will be “ready to talk politics once we secure a future for this industry and the workers who make it run.” He also claimed that a victory for former President Donald Trump “would be a disaster” but said union members “need to see an alternative that delivers real results.”

Interestingly, Trump did not target the auto industry with onerous new rules and mandates regarding MPG standards.

Despite concerns raised by the union, senior officials in the White House have consistently expressed strong support for labor unions in recent years. Biden, in particular, has emphasized the importance of unions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, stating that “union workers are going to transform America.”

This is not the first time that major unions, which typically support Democratic politicians, have refrained from endorsing the current administration. Last year, organizations such as the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees Division and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen criticized the administration’s efforts to prevent a railroad strike from taking place, the Daily Wire reported.
