The Biden administration’s woke war on the military is already being blamed for falling recruitment, but the far-left social experimentation is continuing unabated.

The latest: Turning the Navy ‘vegan.’

According to SOFREP, a provision in this fiscal year’s massive defense spending bill funds a “pilot program” to offer “plant-based” food to sailors at sea.

Proposed by Rep. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), the Navy would “establish and carry out a pilot program to offer plant-based protein options at forward operating basses for consumption by members of the Navy.” The secretary of the Navy would ensure that at least two forward Navy installations test the pilot program.

The purpose is to provide sailors and officers with “meat…where livestock-based protein options may be costly to obtain or store.”

Of course, the Democratic Party’s far-left base wants to eliminate most livestock farming anyway, because herd methane supposedly contributes to ‘global warming.’

“First, under the Obama-Biden Administration, it was ‘Meatless Mondays.’ Then, it was Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D-N.Y.) Green New Deal—which seeks to drastically reduce the consumption of meat. Now, it’s the Biden Administration, who campaigned on continuing the Left’s ‘War on Meat'” at the expense of hardworking producers and farmers, Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) wrote last year.

Potential forward Navy bases, according to the proposal, could include Navy Support Facility Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, the US Fleet Activities Sasebo in Japan, and the Join Region Marianas in Guam, SOFREP noted.

Needless to say, the proposal is getting pushback from lawmakers who understand our defense dollars are better spent on things like weapons, preparing for the next conflict, and, under the Biden regime, recruiting.

SOFREP continues:

The pilot program is set to continue for three years, and the Navy Secretary will submit a comprehensive report to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees with final findings that should include: 

• The consumption rate of plant-based protein options by sailors at bases in the pilot program
• Effective criteria to increase vegan meat offerings at other Navy bases
• And a comparative analysis of the costs to buy, store and serve the plant-based protein versus those for regular meat.

Though the amendment’s core is to introduce healthy but equally tasty sources of protein, the bill notes they will still be supplying “livestock-based protein” during the program.

Supporters of the plan claim that it can save money, and to some extent that may be true. But the military buys its supplies in bulk, obviously, so unless the sea service is buying its supplies on the local economy, then there is already a cost saving built into the food supply chain.

And granted, it could be that vegan diets are healthier in the long run. But the military has a finite amount of resources every year, and right now other line items for the Navy like fleet maintenance, weapons purchases, and building warships are lagging. Why put a single dollar into a social program when the Navy could use the millions of dollars for more pressing priorities?
