Trump To Avoid First GOP Debate, Will Sit For Competing Interview With Tucker Carlson: Report

Former President Donald Trump has made his decision about whether he’ll attend the first GOP debate, which will be moderated by Fox News and held later this month in Milwaukee, Wis.

The answer is “no,” according to a report.

Instead, Trump will sit for a lengthy interview with former Fox star Tucker Carlson, according to The New York Times.

Numerous insiders with ties to Trump have confirmed that the frontrunner of the GOP presidential primary will be absent from the Milwaukee, Wisconsin debate, as reported by The Times. Throughout his campaign, he has consistently hinted at his intention to skip the inaugural debate. Trump, currently holding a substantial lead over his Republican contenders in national and early primary state surveys, recently posted an extensive message on social media, wrapping up with the assertion, “People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate?”

Earlier this month, there were reports indicating that Fox News executives shared a dinner with Trump, seemingly in a bid to persuade him to participate in the debate. According to the guidelines set by the Republican National Committee for the 2024 debates, the ex-president would have been required to endorse the eventual winner of the GOP presidential nomination by signing a pledge.

Trump explained last week he wouldn’t want to sign it because there are “three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president.” The former president added, “So right there, there’s a problem, okay?”

The Times noted: “In the past 24 hours, Mr. Trump has told people close to him that he has made up his mind and will skip the debate in Milwaukee, according to two of the people briefed on the matter.”

“For weeks, the former president has been quizzing aides, associates and rally crowds about what he should do. Until earlier this week, Mr. Trump had been giving people the impression he was considering a last-minute surprise appearance on Wednesday,” the outlet added.

Nonetheless, individuals in his inner circle had been expressing skepticism for months about his participation in the initial pair of Republican debates, both of which are backed by the Republican National Committee.

The Times also claimed that Trump’s apparent choice to abstain from the first debate of the presidential nomination process represents a significant disregard for both the RNC and Fox News.
