Tom Emmer Wins Speaker Nomination But His Path to the Gavel Isn't Assured

The House Republican Conference has nominated Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota to be the next Speaker, but it’s not likely that he’ll garner the requisite 217 votes when the vote comes before the full chamber.

That’s because Emmer isn’t well thought of in Trump World, meaning that faction of GOP lawmakers likely will give him the same treatment Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) got from Emmer’s faction last week.

What’s more, according to Breitbart News, Emmer only won the nomination after five votes, and only by a 117-97 over Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.). That is a fewer number of votes that Jordan won when he received his nomination.

What’s more, Emmer has received the nominal support of at least one Democrat, a colleague from Minnesota who is reportedly considering challenging President Biden for the 2024 nomination.

“The dysfunction in the House is a national and global security issue. I would sit-out the Speaker vote if Tom Emmer will fund our government at negotiated levels, bring Ukraine and Israel aid bills to the floor, and commit to rules changes to make Congress work for the people,” Rep. Dean Phillips noted on the X platform.

Breitbart added:

Emmer may rely on Democrats to win the gavel. While unlikely Democrats vote for him, Capitol Hill is bustling with rumors that Democrats may vote “present” or avoid the vote altogether, in numbers sufficient to lower Emmer’s threshold for victory from 217.

Former President Donald Trump, who had recently endorsed Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), took to Truth Social Tuesday before voting to express his displeasure with Emmer.

Trump shared a message saying, “President Trump doesn’t support Tom Emmer, and neither should you!!!”

Meanwhile, Rep. Rick Allen (R-Ga.) also took to the X platform Tuesday morning to express his opposition to Emmer, saying his vote to support gay marriage was a disqualifier for him.

Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) remarked that the six members who voted “present” or for other members would likely be enough to tank Emmer’s nomination.

“Let’s get our poop in a group people,” he said. “I don’t want us to go out there and in front of the entire world[and] puke on our shoes again. That’s what we’ve been doing.”
