Teacher At North Carolina School Quits After Taping 11-Year-Old's Mouth Shut

A mother in North Carolina is speaking out after her son sent her a photo from his classroom that showed his mouth taped shut as a disciplinary measure taken by his teacher.

According to WRAL-TV, Catherine Webster revealed that her 11-year-old son Brady had sent her a photo from his sixth-grade classroom at Smithfield Middle School last month. In the photo, several strips of blue painter’s tape can be seen covering his mouth. The disciplinary measure was allegedly taken by his teacher as Brady had been talking too much during class.

“I don’t know what to do,” her son wrote in a text message to his mom.

“He was humiliated,” Webster told the local outlet.

Webster told Fox News Digital that her son was recorded at the start of the class and was “forced to sit through the entire period like that.” She further added that two of his peers had also been taped on the same day.

“It had been going on for a while before this day,” Webster claimed regarding the alleged disciplinary measure. “His teacher never once called me to discuss his behavior, so I wasn’t aware he was a problem for her.”

After receiving the photo from her son, Catherine Webster took the matter to the principal’s office, and an investigation was initiated. The teacher, who had been hired in August 2022, reportedly resigned on Feb. 17, just days after the incident occurred, according to WRAL-TV.

“We can confirm that whenever such allegations arise, our administration responds swiftly by investigating the allegations and, sometimes, by removing staff from classrooms pending completion of a thorough review,” the school system said in a statement to the local media outlet.

An investigation by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office revealed that the teacher had faced several other allegations, but after consulting with the district attorney, it was determined that an assault charge was not warranted, as per WRAL-TV.

Webster told Fox News Digital that she is “satisfied” with the manner in which the principal “acted immediately” to make sure that the teacher was not teaching class the next day. However, she is now speaking out to call for “accountability to prevent a similar situation from happening again in the future and to prevent the teacher from simply moving to another jurisdiction.

“Just because Brady didn’t get hurt, doesn’t make this any less serious,” Webster said, according to Fox News Digital.
