A high school honors student in New Jersey says he was kicked out of a virtual class last week for having a Trump sign hanging up behind him.

Anthony Ribeiro, 17, a student at Toms River High School North says his chemistry teacher told him to take down the Trump 2020 flag behind him or leave the class.

It was at that point Ribiero waved goodbye to his class.

The following day, the student says his English teacher also asked him to take down the flag because it could “offend” others. Ribiero agreed to take the flag down, but now regrets doing so.

In an interview with the Asbury Park Press, he said, “Looking back I kind of regret it because I have the right in my house to do what I believe, this should not happen to anyone.”

Ribiero’s mother, Tara Jost, said her son deserves an apology.

‘For this teacher to tell him to take it down and then kick him out of class is absurd. I think they have to make an apology to my son,’ she told the Press.

Jost said her son’s vice principal says the chemistry teacher was wrong.

He was in agreement with me and said they were 100 percent wrong. He said to leave it up,’

The Daily Mail reports:

Ribeiro noted the apparent hypocrisy of the chemistry teacher who, in ordering him to remove the banner last week, said, ‘There is no room for politics in my classroom.’

Earlier in the semester, Ribeiro said, Gilman had made a political prescription to his high school students.

”He made it a political subject talking about global warming and saying Democrats are the only choice you have to make for this because they look at facts and science,’ he said to the Press, which did not reach either teacher for comment

The district’s virtual learning rules sent to students earlier this year mentioned nothing about political statements or signs but did forbid them from wearing pajamas or attending class from bed.
