Ohio voters have recently approved a constitutional amendment that solidifies abortion as a right within the state’s constitution, as reported by the Associated Press.

This move, aimed at protecting access to abortion, faced opposition from State Republicans who argued that the measure extended beyond the boundaries set by Roe v. Wade.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine expressed his reservations about the amendment, stating that it far exceeds what the majority of Ohioans would support.

He raised concerns about the proposed amendment allowing abortions up until the moment of birth and potentially impacting existing laws that require parental consent for minors seeking abortions.

DeWine labeled the proposal, known as Issue 1, as radical and incongruent with the prevailing beliefs in the state.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) was notably involved in advocating for the amendment, emphasizing its necessity to safeguard access to abortion, especially after potential changes or reversals in the Supreme Court’s stance on Roe v. Wade.

However, opponents, including Protect Women Ohio, vehemently criticized the amendment, alleging that it could erode parental rights, enable minor surgeries without parental consent, and permit abortions at any stage of pregnancy.
