Obama: “Politics of White Resistance and Resentment" Made Reparations a “Nonstarter” to Propose

Former President Barack Obama said he believes reparations for black Americans are justified, however, “the politics of white resistance and resentment” prevented him from pushing for them while he was in office.

Speaking on his new podcast Renegades: Born in the USA, which he co-hosts with musician Bruce Springsteen, Obama said, “there’s not much question that the wealth… the power of this country was built in significant part — not exclusively, maybe not even the majority of it, but a large portion of it — was built on the backs of slaves.”

“And what I saw during my presidency was the politics of White resistance and resentment. The talk of ‘welfare queens’ and the talk of the ‘undeserving’ poor. And the backlash against affirmative action,” the former president said.

“All that made the prospect of actually proposing any kind of coherent, meaningful reparations program struck me as, politically, not only a nonstarter but potentially counterproductive.”

He said it was “perfectly understandable why working-class White folks, middle-class White folks, folks who are having trouble paying the bills or dealing with student loans, wouldn’t be too thrilled” about the prospect of “a massive program that is designed to deal with the past but isn’t speaking to their future.”

Fox News points out that Obama has changed his stance on reparations, having previously opposed the proposal during his 2008 presidential campaign. Back then, he argued that “the best reparations we can provide are good schools in the inner city and jobs for people who are unemployed.”

Democrats Urge Biden To Give Up Sole Authority On Nuclear Weapons

In a letter publicized Wednesday, 31 House Democrats, led by Reps. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and Ted Lieu (D-CA), urged President Biden to give up his sole authority to launch nuclear weapons.

“We write to respectfully request that you consider modifying the decision-making process the United States uses in its command and control of nuclear forces,” the letter began.

“As president, two of your most critical and solemn duties are the security of the country and the safeguarding of its nuclear arsenal. You alone possess the authority to order the use of nuclear weapons, which assures that nuclear weapons remain under civilian control,” the letter continued. “However, vesting one person with this authority entails real risks. Past presidents have threatened to attack other countries with nuclear weapons or exhibited behavior that caused other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment.”

“While any president would presumably consult with advisors before ordering a nuclear attack, there is no requirement to do so,” the letter added. “The military is obligated to carry out the order if they assess it is legal under the laws of war. Under the current posture of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes.”

The letter went on to suggest multiple reforms to the policy, like requiring a declaration of war from Congress before any nuclear strikes, or the approval from the speaker of the House of Representatives and the Vice President.

“We note your distinguished record and leadership on nuclear arms control and nonproliferation as senator and vice president. We ask you to lead again,” the letter continued. “As president, you will have the final say on any changes to U.S. nuclear foreign policy. We respectfully request that you, as president, review ways in which you can end the sole authority you have to launch a nuclear attack, and to install additional checks and balances into the system.”

"Kids in Cages" Was Created Under the Obama Administration

Michelle Obama and Joe Biden would like you to believe that children being separated from their family at the border is a Trump policy, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. The have been several instances now when Democrats, trying to prove their point, used photographs of children in cages to attack Trump only to find out that the pictures were taken during the Obama Administration.

As reported in USA Today:

In a 2019 interview with nonpartisan think tank The Aspen Institute, Jeh Johnson, Barack Obama’s Homeland Security secretary, told NPR’s Mary Louise Kelly that the “cages” predate the Trump administration.

“Chain-link barriers, partitions, fences, cages, whatever you want to call them were not invented on January 20, 2017,” Johnson said.

Kelly asked Johnson about a 2014 photograph of him touring an Arizona facility for migrants along with former Gov. Jan Brewer. The picture is archived on the website for the Arizona Capitol Times.

That image was also part of another social media meme accusing Michelle Obama of lying about “kids in cages” during her DNC speech. Facebook user Eulalia Maria Jimenez posted it to her page on Aug. 18. Johnson is circled in red in the image.

Johnson explained the picture was taken during a spike in unaccompanied minors crossing the southern border of the country.

“The kids are being housed in the same facilities built under the Obama administration. If you want to call them cages, call them cages. But if the left wants to call them cages, and the Democrats want to call them cages, then they have to accept the fact that they were built and funded in FY ’15, and I was there,” Homan said, according to a transcript.
The Associated Press reported in late 2019 that an unprecedented 69,550 migrant children were held in U.S. custody over that year.

But Michelle Obama’s assertion that the Trump administration tore children from their families and threw them into cages alludes to “a frequent and distorted point made widely by Democrats,” according to the AP. The facilities designed during the Obama administration to temporarily hold migrants were used for a similar purpose by President Trump, the AP also concluded.

This information has a lot of trouble reaching a Democrat audience when they are fed constant lies from main stream media.
