Charlie Kirk’s Turning Point USA was directly named in the letter from the National School Board Association (NSBA) to President Joe Biden which has resulted in tremendous controversy. The letter’s subject heading reads: “Re: Federal Assistance to Stop Threats and Acts of Violence Against Public Schoolchildren, Public School Board Members, and Other Public School District Officials and Educators.”
The NSBA letter to President Biden attempts to use Turning Point USA in its letter under the vaguest umbrella saying “other groups are posting watchlists against school boards and spreading misinformation that boards are adopting critical race theory curriculum and working to maintain online learning by haphazardly attributing it to COVID-19.”
In the footnotes, the letter references an August 20, 2021 Substack article: “TPUSA launches project targeting school board members.” The “article” is clearly biased, claiming “school board meetings across the country are growing increasingly volatile” without giving any specific incidents. The article then claims “while these protests may appear organic, they are fed on a rich diet of disinformation from groups on the right and cable news shows.”
The article makes a pathetic attempt to paint the TPUSA watchlist as something that deeply infringes upon rights of teachers when the only evidence is simply transparency for parents to understand what their own children are being taught. The article writes:
The website for the new Watchlist project features a full screen video playing in the background of protestors being arrested, and in large font a declaration that this is ‘the battle to save America.’ It’s not subtle, and is clearly designed to inspire action.
The site includes a database of what appears to be every school board member in the country, and includes information on policies, board meetings, and more…According to the website, the project will expose ‘the teaching of Critical Race Theory, the 1619 Project, sexual/gender ideology and more.
Clearly, the left wants to hide what it is teaching our children; they are going through such drastic measures, the NSBA letter goes so far as to declare parents wanting to be informed of their children’s’ curriculum as a “form of domestic terrorism.”
The NSBA letter claims “America’s public schools and its education leaders are under an immediate threat” and therefore “respectfully asks for federal law enforcement and other assistance to deal with the growing number of threats of violence and acts of intimidation occurring across the nation.”
The letter’s line which has, rightly so, enraged the American public and particularly parents of schoolchildren reads: “As these acts of malice, violence, and threats against public school officials have increased classification for these heinous actions could be the equivalent to a form of domestic terrorism and hate crimes.”
Investigation has shown “violence” was a blatantly false word to use as almost all cases are angry parents vocally expressing discontent with school policies. Even the examples used within the letter are far from dangerous. Nonetheless, the NSBA makes dramatic demands: “NSBA specifically solicits the expertise and resources of the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Secret Service, and its National Threat Assessment Center.”
If huge amounts of federal resources weren’t enough, NSBA adds “we also request the assistance of the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to intervene against threatening letters and cyberbullying attacks.”
