Kamala Harris Echoes Biden’s Suspicions over Legitimacy of 2022 Midterms

Vice President Kamala Harris echoed sentiments of President Joe Biden during an interview on Thursday, implying that new voting rights laws being passed would result in the midterm elections being suspended.

“The president has been consistent on this issue,” she said to NBC’s Savannah Guthrie.

“So, what we’re looking at and the topic of so much debate last night was that we as America cannot afford to allow this blatant erosion of our democracy and in particular, the right of all Americans who are eligible to vote, to have access to the ballot unfettered. That is the topic of the conversation.

“Whether Americans with disabilities have the opportunity to vote by mail, whether a single parent has the opportunity with three kids in the backseat to vote by dropping off their ballot in the dropbox instead of having to stand in line with those three kids for hours? These are the issues that are at stake.”

Guthrie said it was “astonishing” to hear the Biden administration cast doubt on the upcoming midterms, asking if Biden thinks that “now that these bills haven’t been passed, that the ’22 midterms won’t be legitimate or fair or free?”

Biden chalked the question up to “political gamesmanship.”

Kamala’s comments come after President Biden said that the midterms could be made “illegitimate” due to the blocking of his administration’s plan to overhaul the voting system.

“I’m not saying it’s going to be legit,” said Biden to media. “The increase in the prospect of being illegitimate is in direct proportion to us not being able to get these reforms passed.”

Both the Democrats’ introduced bills, the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, will likely not make it through due to staunch opposition.

There has been speculation as of late that the Biden administration’s comments may be a subtle threat that they will not certify the election results if things don’t go the Democrats’ way.

Recent polling shows that there has been a “dramatic shift” in party preference from Democrat to Republican, which could be a major concern for the Democrats.

Gallop figures show that American voters prefer the Republicans by five points.

“These results are based on aggregated data from all U.S. Gallup telephone surveys in 2021, which included interviews with more than 12,000 randomly sampled U.S. adults,” states Gallup’s website.
