It's Official: Most Americans Oppose Race-Based College Admissions

A new survey found that most Americans reject race-based college and university admissions standards, though frankly, the number could and should be higher.

According to a recent Pew Research poll conducted on Thursday, 50% of Americans express opposition to the utilization of race-based affirmative action in the admissions process of universities, a finding that comes just ahead of the U.S. Supreme Court’s forthcoming ruling on its constitutionality.

“Approximately 74% of Republicans disapprove of the use of affirmative action while 29% of Democrats also disapprove of the race-based admissions process, according to a Pew Research poll,” The Daily Caller reported.

“In October, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for two lawsuits which will decide whether Harvard University and the University of North Carolina’s use of race-based admission policies is constitutional,” the report noted further.

The poll revealed that approximately 49% of Americans perceive the race-based admissions process as diminishing fairness, while 20% believe it enhances fairness in higher education admissions. Among respondents without college degrees, 52% expressed disapproval of affirmative action.

The poll indicated that approximately one-third of Americans hold the belief that students admitted to college through affirmative action are less qualified compared to other enrolled students. Additionally, around 35% of black Americans stated that they have experienced disadvantages as a result of efforts aimed at increasing racial diversity.

Students for Fair Admissions, a nonprofit organization that opposes race-based policies, argued before the high court that the University of North Carolina reportedly incorporates race as a decisive element in every stage of its admissions process.

Additionally, they argued that Harvard University purportedly imposes a specific quota or limit on the number of minority students admitted to the university.

“The nonprofit has asked the court to overrule Grutter v. Bollinger, a landmark case that said affirmative action admissions policies that favor certain races are not a violation of the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause,” the Daily Caller noted further.
