Immigrant Charged with Double Homicide Was Awaiting Deportation Hearings

An immigrant from Haiti faces serious charges after allegedly committing a double homicide in Middletown, a small town in New York’s Hudson Valley region, The Post Millennial reports.

Kenol Baptiste, 30, stands accused of second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon following the incident on Monday afternoon at an apartment complex on Ruth Court.

Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found the victims, both stabbed multiple times. One was already deceased, while the other, though gravely injured, managed to escape but later succumbed to their wounds at Garnet Health Medical Center, the Times Herald reports.

Baptiste and the victims, whose identities remain undisclosed, were Haitian immigrants who spoke Creole and had been residing together for less than a year, reports the New York Post.

Middletown Police Chief John Ewanciw noted that Baptiste entered the U.S. about a year ago, but further details regarding his immigration status and entry method are still under investigation.

Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus criticized the federal government’s handling of immigration, particularly in cases involving individuals awaiting deportation proceedings. He emphasized the lack of background information and monitoring for those entering the country illegally, holding the Biden administration partly responsible for what he deemed “a failure on all levels of the federal government.”

Baptiste currently awaits further legal proceedings while detained at the Orange County Jail on a deportation hold. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday.
